Dear Premier Zille,
Sonke Gender Justice is a South African NGO headquartered in Cape Town and working from offices in Gugulethu, Braamfontein, Diepsloot and Bushbuckridge. Our nearly one hundred staff and nearly 100 community action teams work day in and day out to advance gender equality and prevent gender violence, address HIV and AIDS, and deepen democracy.
Sonke joins with thousands of Cape Town residents and dozens of civil society organisations in calling for a stop to the sale of the Tafelberg site in Sea Point. Like so many others, we believe the Tafelberg site offers a critical opportunity to address the legacy left by Apartheid residential segregation and the forced removal of communities of colour from Sea Point. It also offers to dramatically improve the lives of the many women working as domestic workers who currently make long and expensive commutes at early hours of the day at great personal and emotional cost to themselves and their families.
We at Sonke believe that government has a constitutional obligation to reverse spatial apartheid in Cape Town, develop affordable housing for all and ensure that everyone has the ability to enjoy a dignified and safe home environment.
We urge you to halt the sale of the Tafelberg site and instead use the space to build an inclusive city in which all residents can coexist and together enjoy the splendour of Sea Point.
